Lower Eastside Sculptor Olivia Beens was born in the Netherlands of Dutch and Czech parents. She lived in Portugal before immigrating to USA at age seven.
In the 1980’s Olivia’s installation/performance work was exhibited at Franklin Furnace, ABC No Rio, PS 122 and many other galleries. She was a member of Colab, PADD, Art Against Apartheid and other social/political organizations and was awarded
fellowships to the Mac Dowell Colony, Virginia Center, Cummington Community, Hambidge Center, and traveled to Portugal, India, and Turkey on fellowships.
Over the years Beens’ work has transformed from Installation/Performance to clay.In 2014 and 2015 Olivia received a SPARC grant to create a series of ceramic murals with older adults. Currently,Beens is a member of the Carter Burden Gallery and AIR at Carter Burden/Covello Center.
